Subject: 1996 Mercury 115hp

David:
On the Ohms test for the stator, 24 ohms between the red and red/white
leads, is within the 15 to 30 ohms range allowed. 1000 to 1400 ohms is the
range allowed, between the blue and blue/white stator leads, and yours is
showing 70,000 ohms. Retest between the blue an blue/white stator leads, and
if the same, replace the stator.

On the trigger test, 850 ohms between the brown and black leads, is within
the 700 to 1000 ohms range allowed. Mercury does not show a test between the
white and black trigger leads. The test between the white and violet leads
has a range of 700 to 1000 ohms.

My quote for replacement parts remains the same. Mercury changes part #'s
from the original ones, everytime they make any manufacturing change.

Yamaha does not have available, kerosine fueled outboards, for sales in the
USA, as they do not meet Coast Guard or EPA regulations. Both Yamaha and
Mercury have directed their dealers to sell outboards only in the dealers
sales and service territory. Should I sell an outboard outside of my
Northern Idaho territory, I face the loss of my dealership with Mercury or
Yamaha.

Yamaha has agreed to let me sell those non-currant Yamaha outboards that I
have in stock, outside my territory, but I do not have any 40, 50 or 70hp

Subject: 1996 Mercury 115hp

David:
There is no resistance test that can be performed on the switchbox. Mercury
does have a test, but it r0@equires their DVA Meter and even then, the test
can be inconclusive. Replacing the stator should solve your problem. Be sure
to check the magnets in your flywheel. There have been some cases where the
magnets have broken, or have come loose, requiring the replacement of the
flywheel as well as the stator.

It is doubtfull that your switchbox is bad, since it normally only affects
fire on some but not all cylinders, should it start to fail.

Check and make sure that the 25hp Mercury is centered on the transom of the
boat. Also is thep cavitation plate on the 25hp, even with or just below the
bottom of the boat ? The reason your outboard is cavitating in a tight turn,
is that it is picking up air, either from above the surface of the water, or
from under the boat. If your 25hp is centered, and is not mounted too high
on the transom, then you may be picking up air from the center keel on the
bottom of your boat.

years. As I recall, Mercury stopped making them because of problems with the
hubs. Mercury does still have a 3 blade aluminum prop. with the same 8.75"

I do not have a used, complete distributor for your 1978 Mercury 115hp. If
you can let me know which parts you need for your distributor, I do have
most of them, used, in stock, not including the trigger assembly or
distributor cap.

Is the "entrance cable assembly " that you refer to, the external harness
with female plug, that goes between the outboard and the control box ? The
internal wiring harness has a male pin plug and contains most of the wiring
for your 115hp. I do not have this harness, used, and new ones from Mercury
retail for $141.35, your cost is $106.80 plus shippng.

Your cost for a new coil wire assy. is $4.40, none used in stock. I do not
have any good, used spark plug wire's in stock. New spark plug wire kits
from Mercury retail for $16.15 and your cost is $12.90 each. You would need
6 kits to replace all your plug wires.

Carburetor was 6G 8-14301-01-00. This carburetor is no longer available from
Yamaha and has been superseded by Yamaha to a 6G8-14301-09-00 carburetor.
The 6G9-14301-01-00 carburetor was used on the 1991 F series 4 stroke Yamaha
outboards, that did not have the high thrust gearcase that your T9.9ELRP
has.

I do not have a used 6G8-14301-01-00 carb. for your outboard. The
replacement 6G8-14301-09-00 carb. has an electric starter mounted on top of
the carb. instead of the older style plunger/diaphragm, start-choke assy.
Otherwise it is the same carb as the original. This carb. retails for

I do not know the year your 50hp was built, as you did not provide the
serial #. In regards to your p—problem, in most cases, by forcing the outboard
to turn the other way, you can unlock the motor, since it has been forced to
travel beyound it's stop , built into the swivel bracket. In most cases it
will not be necessary to disassemble any parts to remedy the problem.

To my knowledge, the only 90hp that Bayliner used in 1990, was a 90hp
Force motor with the Force L -Drive. Because of the limited space
allowed by Bayliner in their engine compartment, and the manner in which
the boat is constructed, installation of a different engine is not
practical.
Mercury does not have a complete new Force 90hp L-Drive assembly
available. They do have a short block, which retails for $2786.00 and
your cost would be $2468.00 plus shipping.

The 90hp short block, that I quoted a price on, is not a complete engine. It
is only the block0@, pistons, & crankshaft assy., and does not include stator,
flywheel, starter, carbs or drive unit. It is a new unit that is still
available from Mercury.
$2000 for the boat is not bad, if the engine and drive are in good
condition. If not then I would advise getting an estimate of cost for
repairs.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but the carb that I thought I
had located, turned out to be the wrong one. I have found anouther carb
today, that is rebuildable, and it is being sent to me by the dealer. When I
recieve this carb, I will make sure that it is the correct one and that it
is rebuildable.

Yamaha sent me the information regarding all that is involved in using the
newer type carb on your 9.9hp. The Prime Start Kit contains 22 items
including: Carb, stator, pulser coil, magneto base, rectifier & regulator,
thermostat etc.. Price for the kit $615.00. You would also need apF new
flywheel for $350.21. Needless to say that "Yamaha really dropped the
ball" when they made the original carbs no longer available !!!

The period of time for the promotion was from Jan 1st to April 20th in 1999.
1999 model 2 thru 30hp, 4 stJ Lrokes recieved a total of 5 years warranty. 1996
thru 1998 model 2 thru 30hp, both 2 and 4 strokes recieved a total of 4
years warranty. This extended warranty had to be applied for by the dealer
with Yamaha. Check with the dealer you purchased the outboard from.

Don: The carb that I ordered will cost $187.00 plus shipping. Untill I
see it, I will not be able to deter mine it's condition, and what parts it
might need to be rebuilt. Part of the problem in locating a used carb at a
reasonable price, is that many of the dealers know that this carb is no
longer available, and have raised their prices for any used ones they might
have. I was qouted $385.00 by one dealer in Florida.

Roy:
As you have already had a 70hp Yamaha on your boat, I doubt that the 3
cylinder 90hp Yamaha, wou ld offer that much more in performance. Yamaha's
115hp and 130hp models are V 4's and either one would work fine on your
boat. The following prices include: side mount control box, 2.8 Gal oil
tank, 2 guages, control cables and a stainless steel prop. Prices do not

More and more customers are havingp us rebuild their existing outboards
rather than trade them in. The biggest problem regarding parts for outboards
in the Caribbean is I have found many of the models in use there, were not

fit the outboards that you are dealing with. This has resulted in many parts

Mercury. Part of the problem is that it has to come from a 50hp with a
serial # between 4576237 and 5193258. Many dealers lose track of the
original serial # of the motors they have in stock, so cannot guarantee the
the flywheel and stator will be the right ones.

A new flywheel from Mercury retails for $393.75 and your cost would be
$318.60 plus shipping. A new stator retails for $291.50 - your cost $236.25
plus shipping. A new trigger retails for $66.95 - your cost $50.90 plus
shipping.

cyl. 135hp Mercurys were built in 1970 and 1971. The starting serial # was
2839369 and ending serial # was 3293233.

I do have a used gear housing for a 135hp Mercury for $218.60. New housings
are no longer available from Mercury, and when last available were over
$800.00. You need to determine where the water was getting into your
original gearcase, as well as bearings, shafts Etc. that may need to be
replaced. Mercury does not have a seal kit for your 135hp, but all seals,
O-rings and gaskets are still Yavailable, but must be ordered separately.
