Jeff: I have located a fresh water used top cover for your 1977 Merc
40 hp. It is located in Hackinsack, MN, and the dealer has always delivered
to me, used parts in a good condition, and properly identified. The internet
has provided a great wealth of information, products and resources. At 55
years young, the connections I have been developing thru the internet, are
providing sources of parts needed by you and others, at a relatively
reasonable price. I have found the internet to be a great equalizer, anyone
out of line, is soon left in the wake of all the rest.

included in my package sent to you, but is being shipped direct to you by

Mercury oil would be my first preference, then Evenrude or Johnson
oil. Avoid the others, Penzoil may be TCW-3, but will carbon up your outbard
faster than many of the others. the problem with the TCW rating system is
that it has a very wide range of acceptance, in meeting the OEM's
criteriera,. Wal mart, Kmart and the other cheap oils fall at the very
bottom, having barely passed, with Yamaha oil at the very top of the list.
Mercury, OMC and other major brands are very high on that list.

Jan: I have just recieved a Yamaha, 1986 90hp with a non-rebuildable powerhead
that I am parting out. The trim-tilt motor has been checked out, no water inside
and has 80% of it's brushes left, armature in very good condition, This motor is the same
as used on the 70hp, has 2 a 3 wire electrical harness, 2 top long bolts
that hold the motor to a 3 bolt base that is triangular in it's outline
shape. The used motor is available for $217.00, ot I can order a new unit
for $372.00.
UPS shipping to Bergen, Norway, would be $77.30 , and the US Postal
Service - Airmail service, which would arrive in 4 to 7 days is $39.67. The
US Postal Service also offers - Express Mail Int'l Service, which is 2 to 3

Arthur: By the serial #4233223, your 85hp was built in 1975. The
coil lead and spark plug leads at the distributor cap, have threaded
connectors on their ends, and must be unthreaded, counterclockwise, to be
removed. This was done because the dist. cap is upside down, and Mercury did
not want the leads to fall out.
A new coil lead is $9.30. A new kit to make up the 4 spark plug
leads is $16.15, and a new distributor cap is $88.75. I have the distributor

housings used, depending on the casting # on the original housing. The
casting # is located inside the housing, between the water pump and trim tab
bolt. If the casting # is 1647-6670C, then the part # for the housing is
1647-7321A11. This housing is no longer available from Mercury nor do I have
a used one.
If the casting # is 1647-8675C, then the original part # was
1647-7350A4 which Mercury updated to 1647-8688A9, and then to 1647-8688T9.

it confirms that, if a voltage drop ocurs after the voltage regulator /
rectifiers warm up, that they are bad. The only other possibility, would be
the stator. But if the stator was breaking down, the outboard would not run
right, thru it's full rpm range.
The original voltage regulator / rectifier part # has been changed
by Mercury, indicating that a change in construction has occured. The new

I am trying to help you with saving as much as possible, but I am unfamiliar
with your laws, and or duties. From what you have told me, gasket sets and
seal kits, have a lower duty than bearings, gears, cover nuts - Etc. Does
the water pump kit fall in the lower duty area ? The other problem
is the weight of the pinion gear and bearing - the cover nut and shift cam
weigh very little.
Please let me know if the water pump kit is considered as a low duty item.

David:
The starter gear that I sent you was for a 1996 Model 130hp. In your
original request for parts, you refered to your 130hp as being " only 3
years old ". Based on this, I believed it to be built in 1996. The 1997 and
1998 models use a different starter and starter gear. My mistake in not
confirming with you the year. You are welcome to return the starter gear and
I will credit your bankcard for $115.27, when I recieve it.
Please send me the Model # of your Yamaha 130hp, so that I can determine the
actual year that it was built. The stator I sent you is the correct one
because Yamaha has used the same stator on their 1993 thru 1998 model 130hp.
The irregular running of your outboard, may be due to the carbs, but I doubt
that. The engine running smoothly untill it warms up, is more an indication
of an electrical problem, than a fuel problem. You may have either a pulser
coil or a CDI unit, that are breaking down as they warm up. Did you test the
pulser coil and CDI unit, when you tested the stator ? One trick that I have
learned is to test these parts when they are cold, and then using a hair
dr` p!yer, test them again when they are at operating temperature.
In regards to your lower gearcase, have you checked your gear lube ? If it
is not milky looking (water) or have metal particals in it, and looks clean
with no stinky smell to it, then it may be ok. You might want to check your
shifting setup. To do this, disconnect the shift cable at the engine
inside the cowling ), put the outboard in neutral gear making sure that the
prop turns freely both directions without any clicking noise. Then adjust
the shift cable to match.
You said that the parts got to Bermuda eventually. Could you please let me
know the date that you recieved them ? They were sent to you by Airmail on
Monday, the 13th of September.

impeller is bad, and the top pump housing is ok, you will not need a water
pump kit.

Since the oil pump feeds oil to the fuel pump, where it is mixed with fuel
before getting to the carbs, the top carb is a good possibility. Did you
check the reeds on the top reed block assy. ? Also was there any sign of
water getting into the top cylinder from a leaking rear cover gasket,
exhaust manifold gasket or a cracked cylinder wall ? The only other thing
would be an overheating problem. The top cylinder would be the first to show
damage since it will run the warmest.

Bill Kelly did not include the horsepower of your Mariner, but the Model #
695 indicates that it is a 25hp and the Serial # S020865 shows it to be a
1979 Model with a CDI magineto system - no breaker points.
If your Mariner is a 25hp with a CDI magineto system, then you already have
a Lighting Coil on your outboard and there should be 2 electrical leads that
are not connected into anything.
A new Mariner rectifier for your 25hp is available that includes an inline
fuse and battery charging electrical cable. The 2 leads from the rectifier,
plug into the leads from the lighting coil. The rectifier kit, Part #84239M,
is $87.20. The only other parts that you would need, are the rectifier

and Starter Motors will be different, as well as exhaust manifolds and many

In regards to a back-up generator for a hospital, the largest generator that
Yamaha makes, is a 12000 watt gas generator that produces 9500 watts on a
continuous basis. This Yamaha generator sells for $4299.00, but because of
the Y2K demand, it is sold out and will not be available again until
sometime in Febuary of the year 2000. Even at 9500 watts, I doubt that it
would meet your needs for a hospital.

From what you have discribed, your problem is with the carburation. You will
need to remove the 2 carbs, disassemble, clean, and set the float levels.
New inlet needles and carb gasket sets, should be all that you would need.

metal pump motor and reservoir. I do have a, all metal, used hydrulic pump
assembly with 2 solenoids for $238.35 + shipping. The control valve on the
bottom of it's reservoir, has a knob for releasing the hydraulic system in
order to manualy raise or lower the outboard. It's part # is 76395A5.
A new replacement hydraulic pump has a plastic motor housing, reservoir and
control valve, sells for $499.35, and does not include the 2 solenoids or

Sorry but I have not been able to locate a source for Crusader owner's
manuals or service manuals. Crusader has been sold to Pleasurecraft Marine,
but after 3 hours of searching the Web, still have had no luck finding a
source for original manuals.

Subject: 1978 Mercury 90hp parts

I do not know which engine manual you are using, but both Mercury's service
manual and parts list, do not show any reference to an oil guide
(lubricating sleeve) as having been used on your gearcase. I doubt very much
that your gearcase is missing one, since none are shown to have ever been
used on your 90hp. The gearlube is circulated thru the top bearing, by the 3
gears which act as a pump.
The black plastic flush plug, part # 19-48750 is $1.35, and the rubber
washer that goes on it's end, and seals the hole in the side of the
waterpump base, part # 12-49221 is $0.45. Ip € do not have either one in stock,
but you should be able to get them in your area.

Yamaha does not make any Liquid Propane fueled generators, nor any with
automatic transfer switches. Yamaha does have a 12kw gas fueled generator
without transfer switch, but this unit is sold out and will not be available
untill late Febuary of next year.

The largest outboard that Mercury makes is a 250hp model with Electronic
Fuel Injection. The base price for this model is $13,010.00 not including
controls, propeller or guages. Both Mercury and Yamaha Dealers, are
restricted to selling new outboards, only in the dealer's sales and service
territory. My territory is limited to Northern Idaho, and should I sell any
Mercury or Yamaha outboard beyond that territory, I face the loss of my
dealership.
